The overall death toll of this event was 23 000, out of which 20 000 were in one town:Armero, which before had 29 000 inhabitants, so 2 out of 3 people in this town died during this tragedy. Apart from Armero other villages suffered too, such as Chinchina, bringing the number to 23 000
