Your end result has to come out with the unit "gallons."

Write and solve an equation of ratios, as follows:

180 miles       420 mi
-------------- = ------------
 12 gal                x

Then 180x = 5040, or x = 20

The car would need 20 gallons of gas to travel 420 miles.
