Explain how you can use place value patterns to describe how 50 and 5,000 compare

The 5 in 50 is in the tens place, so it's value is 5*10.  The 5 in 5,000 is in the 1000s place, so it's value is 5*1000.  1000 is 100*10, so 5,000 is 100 times 50.
