Second and last options; first place is x, so 2nd place would be (x-50), and 3rd place would recieve 50 less than second place for a total of (x-100). You add them because it wants the total. Now you can distribute the equation in the second option to get 3x-150, as you have 3 xs and you have to sum the -50 and -100.
