Framers of the constitution were concerned with mob rule. They wanted to make sure that the best candidate was chosen for the role, and they believed a popular vote would not achieve that. They were afraid that ordinary citizens would choose only whom they THOUGHT was the best, not who is the best. As an alternative, the framers made it to where selected knowledgeable representatives voted for the candidates.
