Simply divide the number by 3. Therefor splitting it into 3 and calculating the value of each section. By dividing by 3 you get an instant answer as to what a 3rd of it’s value is. Think 1/3rd of 9, now imagine evening distributing 9 marbles in 3 cups. You’ve just divided 9 by 3. The number in any of the cups is the same. That’s what dividing (generic division at least) does.
