Hieroglyphic writing ended in Egypt around the fourth century C.E. The knowledge of how to read them was lost over time. However, the discovery of the Rosetta Stone in 1799 changed this. After figuring out the Rosetta Stone's mysteries, hieroglyphic writing was understandable.
