The Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act of 1994 is a federal wiretap law for traditional wired telephony that was expanded to include wireless, voice over internet protocol (VoIP), and other forms of electronic communications. This law requires equipment manufacturers and telecommunications providers to allow law enforcement agencies to intercept communications on digital switching equipment.
